Sheryl Wood came to the First Presbyterian Church when her husband Jim was called as a Senior Pastor. Sheryl received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina.
Sheryl and her husband Jim have known each other since they were in high school.
They have three sons who have been a delight to raise…for the most part. Ross graduated from the University of Mary Washington. He is now living in Morocco working with the Peace Corp. Adam is attending Virginia Military Institute where he is double majoring in Chemistry and History. He also enjoyed his time studying at Oxford in England. Zachary is in his senior year in high school and plays to pursue a career in music.
As a result of her deep love for Christ her Savior, when she is not watching her family, her life is all about missions. In the summer of 2006 Sheryl joined the staff of First Presbyterian Church as its Mission Outreach Coordinator. Prior to being on the FPC staff, Sheryl served for six years as the Hunger Action Enabler for the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia. Sheryl has worked with many agencies around Norfolk, such as the Food Bank, Virginia Inter Council, Her Shelter, Access AIDS and the McDonald House at Sentara Hospital.
In addition to local missions, Sheryl has a great zeal to share the love of Christ through foreign mission. She has lead trips to Africa, Guatemala, and Nicaragua and is currently planning a trip to Israel. One of her great passions is the Living Waters for the World program that brings clean drinking water to those who do not have it. At present time there have been 11 systems installed from First Presbyterian Church. During Jim’s six-month sabbatical she lived with her family on the grounds of Nazareth Hospital in Kenya, where she worked with AIDS and Hunger Ministries.
Hospitality, step aerobics and laughing are some of Sheryl’s favorite things to do.
