Sheryl Wood
Jim Gates
Sheryl Wood came to the First Presbyterian Church in 1999, when her husband Jim was called as Senior Pastor. They have known each other since they were in High School. They have three sturdy boys who keep both of them on their toes: Ross who is majoring in philosophy in college; Adam who loves reading and surfing; and Zach who loves music. Tusker, her African dog, is yet another male challenge that Sheryl has!

Sheryl received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of South Carolina. For six years, she served as the Hunger Action Enabler for the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia. Sheryl has worked with many agencies around Norfolk such as the Food Bank, Virginia Inter Council, Her Shelter and the Ronald McDonald house at Sentara Hospital. As a result of her deep love for Christ her Savior, when she is not taking care of her husband and sons, her life is about missions.

In the summer of 2006, Sheryl joined the staff of First Presbyterian as its Mission Outreach Coordinator.  Sheryl's love and devotion to Christ is lived out through trips that she has taken and led throughout the past 15 years, among them - Guatemala, Nicaragua and Africa. One of her great passions is the Living Waters for the World program - bringing clean drinking water to people who do not yet have it. Sheryl has helped get 5 water units installed in Nicaragua and in Africa. During Jim's recent six-month sabbatical, Sheryl lived with her family on the grounds of Nazareth Hospital in Kenya. There she worked with the AIDS and Hunger Ministries.

Cooking, walking and reading are some of Sheryl's hobbies. Her recent life-goal is to begin SCUBA diving again now that her children are older.
