Class of 2022
Elizabeth and her husband, Hal, first came to FPC in 2001 and have been members ever since, except for a few years when they returned to Seattle while Hal was still active duty Navy. Elizabeth was an assistant to both Jim Wood and Valena Hoy, has taught children’s Sunday school, coordinates Financial Peace University and substitutes at the Welcome desk when needed. She has been involved with Bible Study Fellowship, International for over 20 years, in leadership for many of those years including 5 years as the Substitute Teaching Leader for the Virginia Beach Evening Women’s class. She and Hal have two adult children: Emily and John.
Dave was led to Christianity at the age of 14 through the Godly love shown to him by his Grandmother, Annie Fryer, and has been a member of FPC since 2005. He served on the Board of Tree of Lives and has been a part of three mission trips to Kenya. He also worked with the inner city program in Park Place and various job training programs in and around Norfolk. It is in these places where Dave has been in the presence of God the most, with the poorest of the poor, the sick, the forgotten, and those just trying to make a decent living for themselves and their families. Dave is married to Deborah, and they have two grown daughters, Danielle and Leslie. He is grateful to be a part of such a strong church family at FPC.
Ronald ‘Ron’ L. Fritch
Ron and his wife of 31 years, Sheryl, moved to Norfolk in the summer of 2014 to to spend time with family members active in the Navy. Ron and Sheryl have four sons and daughters-in-law and nine grandchildren. Ron joined FPC in the fall of 2014 and is currently the Chief Financial Officer for Eggleston. He has been teaching children’s Sunday school since the fall of 2015. Ron attends Shoulder2Shoulder and Sheryl is a member of the Wednesday morning Women’s Bible Study and assists at the front desk on Sundays.
Mark has been a member of FPC for 18 years and serves as the leader of the Men’s Ministry. He has also served as a deacon and completed a mission trip to Kenya. He grew up in Ocean City, New Jersey and accepted Christ as his Savior at a Campus Crusade retreat in 1974. He moved to Virginia in 1990 to work at CBN headquarters in Virginia Beach and recently retired from his work at ChristianFamilyBusinessCenter.com, a resource for men and women who own a business and who endeavor to operate that business according to principles set forth in the Bible. In 1996, Mark’s first wife, Jane, passed away due to complications from a 14-year battle with multiple sclerosis. Mark later married Catherine, an orthodontist. He enjoys reading, writing, traveling, spending time with Catherine and their friends and playing with their dog, Barney.
Merlinda J. Swearingen
Merlinda resides in Norfolk with her husband Edmund, who is active duty in the U.S. Navy, and their two sons, Talisen (18) and Bairn (16). Merlinda is a full time mom, and owner of Mer Made Pilates & Fitness. She has been a member of FPC for over 15 years. Both of her children attended FPC Preschool. At FPC, Merlinda has served as a Sunday school teacher for preschool and middle school classes, and is presently the Moderator of the Diaconate.
Page has been a member of FPC for 20 years and lives in Norfolk with her husband, Joel and their two kids, Kate (19) and Cole (17). Both children attended FPC Preschool, where Page also taught. She now works full time at The Williams School. She served as Moderator of the Diaconate and taught adult Sunday school at FPC. She and Joel are facilitators for the Dynamic Marriage course held at FPC periodically throughout the last 10 years.
Class of 2022
Ashley is married to John Bartlett and they have two children: Jack (13) and Jane (8). Ashley and John have been attending First Presbyterian Church since 2010. Ashley has had the pleasure of serving at FPC by supporting Dr. Harris at the Urban Renewal Center and by volunteering as a Sunday school teacher. She is currently actively involved in the Marriage Ministry.
A member of FPC since 2012, Naomi has a love for music, hospitality, and teaching children. She served as a Sunday school teacher for ages 3-5 for several years, volunteered with Vacation Bible School in snack preparation and set decoration and now sings at the 11 am service with the choir. She also prepares and delivers meals on occasion and enjoys listening to people and praying with them. Naomi is married to Andrew Hochhaus, a member who plays guitar for the 9:30 am worship service. Their children are Sophie, a rising 6th grader, and Allison, a rising third grader.
Chie ‘Hana’ Townsend
Hana and her husband, William, and their three sons began attending FPC in October of 2017. Hana has served the congregation as a substitute teacher in the Preschool and as a member of the choir. She and William have two sons: Sean (10) and Ken (8); and while they still mourn the loss of their son, Kyle, who died last year, they are eternally grateful for the love and support they continue to receive from the FPC family of faith.
Brian has been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 2000 and regularly attends worship and Sunday school with his wife, Anne Marie, and their four children, Caroline, Pierce, Mary Ella and Jack. In 2008, he became a Deacon. As part of his journey at First Presbyterian Church, he enjoys being involved in NEST, summer mission trips, the Sticky Faith Sunday School Class, flower delivery and Youth Group.

Cline and his wife, Jennifer, have been members at FPC for 14 years. Cline has served FPC in various capacities including, ushering, youth leadership, men’s ministries, Session membership, and currently as the Treasurer. Cline and Jennifer have three children: Cora (7), Caroline (6), and Colin (3).
