Today's Reading: Mark 8:1 - 9:50
Most of the time, in the Gospel of Mark, the disciples do not understand Jesus. Our reading today reminds us how much the disciples misinterpret, argue and miss the point of what Jesus is doing, saying, teaching and proclaiming.
- Jesus warns the disciples of the yeast of the Pharisees and the disciples wonder why he is talking about bread.
- Peter exclaims the truth that Jesus is the Messiah; yet, he does not understand Jesus has come to die.
- The disciples argue among themselves about who is the greatest.
Like the disciples, I, too, miss the true message of Jesus. How about you?
From today's reading, I find wisdom in the words of a desperate father. This father is seeking healing for his son. Jesus' disciples have attempted and failed in healing him. After a conversation about his son's symptoms, Jesus says to the father, "Everything is possible for one who believes." The father exclaims, "I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief!"
I believe; help my unbelief!
Help me believe, Jesus, when I don't understand the symbolism in your words.
Help me believe, Jesus, when I deny your self-sacrificing nature.
Help me believe, Jesus, when I am self-centered and argue about unimportant things.
Help me, Jesus, to be a disciple who believes in YOU.
Questions for today:
Do you believe Jesus?
What do you argue about?
Who do you say Jesus is?
What is Jesus calling you to do?
Now….put down your Bible and go do it!
