Ghent Area Ministries

Ghent Area Ministry (GAM) is a faith-based outreach ministry dedicated to assisting those in need in the Norfolk community through financial assistance, resources, and services.  Those with financial difficulties receive help with rent, utilities, prescriptions, food, local transportation, and obtaining state IDs.  Additionally, clients receive assistance through The Coat Closet and the Food Pantry.

GAM works in conjunction with other social services agencies in Norfolk to provide needed resources and services to its clients.  Daily needs addressed by GAM include bag lunches, hygiene kits, emergency food bags and temporary photo IDs.

Volunteers are always welcome to help with client intake, answering phones, sorting and organizing donations, and serving clients. During the holiday seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas they assist with the sorting and distribution of holiday meal baskets which include a frozen turkey.

In past years, First Presbyterian members have provided food items for needy families through Thanksgiving baskets.  This year, the baskets will be due in the church by November 20th.  GAM has been averaging 15 families needing food assistance monthly, which averages 30 bags of food.

Donations of gently-used clothing (specifically jeans, work pants, sweaters, tennis shoes, and jackets) can be dropped off at 1301 Colonial Avenue during working hours, 9:00 am-3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Donations of NEW mens' underwear, t-shirts and white work socks are always needed as well. The Coat Closet offers clothing at no cost to men and women clients and the average number served monthly is 60.

GAM received more than 60 coats through the collection drive at FPC in October and November  in 2010 to help keep the clients warm during these colder months. We will begin this year's coat collection on October 20th.

ADDRESS for GAM:  1301 Colonial Avenue.  The offices are located directly across the street from the back side of Harris Teeter, one-half block north of Princess Anne Road.

GAM gives thanks for our supporting congregations, both the financial and prayerful support, for the work we are doing in Norfolk for His Kingdom. We continue to see daily evidences of His Word that tells us "... my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Phil 4:19
